This is a beautiful and profound truth that fills my heart with adoration and worship. God has made a covenant with man, and He is wholly faithful to that covenant, even when we are not. (2Tim 2). In Christ, God removed the curse of the law and washed us, giving us his very nature and Spirit to live in us forever. God has given himself so completely to us, that though we may turn our affections and worship away from him for a time, He will not forsake or abandon us. In fact, it is because He is bound to us in faithful love that He is subject to grief when we depart from him. If He were not so committed to us, He could forsake us and spare himself the grief that comes from unrequited love. But he does not forsake us, and therefore he remains, bound to us, and to grief when we depart from him, even as we grieve for a lost love. (Yet it is more because his love is so much stronger and true than ours.)
He longs for faithful lovers who will worship Him in Spirit and in truth. Isaiah says that his eyes move back and forth through the earth, seeking a heart that is wholly His, a “perfect” heart. He longs for our affections to be set upon Him alone. So the Spirit grieves because, while He is ever faithful and never failing, we do not always remain faithful. It makes me think, how long are we willing to be continually hurt by someone we love? How long do we put up with a lack of response from a loved one, or words that hurt, or feeling disrespected. Though are weak and prone to failure in our love of God, He does not fail us. He will not forsake or abandon us. When we turn back to Him, he is always there to receive us. How beautiful is our Lord. This love is so beyond human understanding that it takes an act of God just to comprehend it! (I Peter 1). May it bend us, and soften us, that we may love Him and yield to his direction within us at every point. He has given himself completely to us. May we not fall short in giving ourselves completely to Him. His eyes are longing, searching for such a heart. On this one He will rest, even as we find rest in Him.
