All of thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia…” Psalm 45: 8-9
“Come onto me all ye that are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, learn of me: for I am meek and lowly in heart.” (Matthew 11:28)
He is meek, merciful, kind. He will not turn away from the weary soul in it’s imperfection. He is lowly, recieving the broken hearted and the weak into his presence. In His presence, we need not grovel for attention. We already have His full attention. “How precious are thy thoughts towards unto me, Oh God! How great is the sum of them!“(Ps 139:17). In His meek presence there is no need for vigilance in an effort to win his love. It is too late for that, for He has already lavished His love upon us! God so loved the world that He gave his only son. While hanging on the cross, grasping for each slight breath, Jesus had one request for his executioners: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." He is merciful.
In the absence of this meek and lowly love we are left to work, grovel, and wonder if we are embraced and accepted. Our thoughts dart this way and that as we strive for the steady gaze of love that we crave. In the presence of one who is proud, arrogant, and demanding, we feel uneasy lest we offend or displease. We become weary of working for love. But in the presence of one who is meek and unassuming, we relex into the truth that we are fully embraced, deeply cherished. He is meek and lowly.
"All of thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia." Myrrh releases it’s fragrance in the process of crushing, and so it is with love. Myrrh, the fragrance of his sacrificial love. Aloes for the healing of our wounds, for only this kind of love can heal us. Cassia, or cinnamon, the sweet rest and repose of the one who is so loved. The strength and healing sweetness of love can only be released through it’s willingness to be crushed. Healing comes to us when love bears the painful wounds of our wrongs without taking offence, becoming angry, or turning away in resentment. His love was crushed under the weight of our sin, and from that place he calls out to us , “Come unto me.” My arms are here to receive you. Lie down in the shade of my love. This is the sweetness, the precious charms of His love. He is meek and lowly.
"Have you seen him, the Lover of my soul? He is more beautiful than ten thousand!" “This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing, yet they would not hear.” (Isiaiah 28: 12). There is no other rest, though the world would have you believe that other things can soothe you. There is no other well where you can fully quench your thirst, though the world would have you believe that there are many. If you hear Him calling, respond. You will find healing for your wounds, and rest for you soul. He awaits your response to His invitation.
